WELCOME TO ZOO LABS!

You've made it. Now the hard work begins.

The goal of the residency is for you to drive your music by building a business, crafting strategy and being supported.

We provide the support. You provide the drive.

ZLMR FAQ

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO BE DOING?

  • Learning, building, recording, eating, growing. We’ll introduce you to industry experts that will lead business workshops, as well as an array of mentors, influencers, and Zoo Labs Alumni to guide your strategy and team building. You will also have full access to our studio alongside established producers and engineers where you’ll craft new music that fits into the business model you’re building. This culminates in a presentation of your business, your art and the value & opportunity they provide.

WHAT ARE MY DELIVERABLES?

  • Music and a demo + business pitch:

    • Release Day occurs at the end of the residency. It's important that you understand that at the end of the residency your team will pitch your business idea and the music you worked on in front of guests from different industries, then provide a musical experience. This experience can be in the form of a concert or something else. Since our teams are not all bands it depends on the team to come up with their own unique spin on this idea.

      • We invite VIPs from the Zoo Labs network. This could include potential investors, partners and industry influencers. The goal is for your team to share (in 10 minutes: 5min Demo + 5min Pitch/Lessons Learned) what you’ve learned, and how you’re structuring your business and strategy in the form of a PowerPoint-style pitch. The audience will ask questions and provide feedback.

      • Once all the teams have pitched, we will open the doors to the public for a live show. You are encouraged to share the work you’ve created in the studio.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME?

  • Our biggest expectations of you are to be open minded and to take risks. Zoo Labs is a safe and flexible space. Please come ready to expand your mind and work through the tough stuff.

  • We don’t want you to use your time to “record your album” or “finish your mixes from your EP.” You should aim to create three new pieces of art [music or otherwise] and to treat them like sketches; color in the spaces or leave the wireframe models, just make sure they translate your message & vision.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

  • Though it varies day to day, you can expect workshops in the morning through afternoon and studio time every evening. We start at 10a each day and have staff on hand with you until 11p each day. Expect to feel underwater the first few days, treading water in middle of the residency and backstroking towards the finish line by the end.

  • In addition to workshops, we schedule office hours with different mentors and members of Team Zoo Labs, chances to brainstorm openly and a half-way check in to share where you're at in the process.  As you may have guessed it, the check in is half way into the residency at Day 6 or so.  What we've seen in the past is that the residency is like a slow time release capsule. The ideas will continue to unfold and manifest over the next year.  These 12 days will help you prepare you for the next 12 months.

REMEMBER, YOU’RE DESIGNING YOUR BUSINESS
This is not school. This is life. The workshops are designed to put you on a path to design your own path. Ultimately, it’s up to you and your team to continue to build, think, throw away ideas and rebuild outside of the workshops.

ARE THERE OTHER TEAMS JOINING US DURING THE RESIDENCY?

  • There will be two to three other teams joining you during your residency.

DO WE SHARE STUDIOS?

  • We rotate teams through the studios two to three times during the residency, so that everyone can get access to the special stuff each space offers. Some teams also choose to do their recording time beyond the residency itself. During our pre-residency planning we’ll talk about what you’re trying to accomplish so that you are setup in a recording environment that will help you most.

WHO IS GOING TO HELP ME MAKE MY MUSIC?

  • During our pre-residency planning, we’ll discuss the kind of music makers and production staff you need to thrive. At that point, we’ll match you with a Producer-Engineer form our community that we trust to see your vision through. Unless you applied with one on your team, you are welcome to invite a producer of your own into the sessions. You are responsible for keeping your creative goals aligned with your business goals. An engineer will be provided no matter what.

WHERE DO THE WORKSHOPS HAPPEN?

  • Workshops start in the main Startup Lab at the center of the building. They also happen in other spots occasionally, including the studios and the garden.

IS THERE AN UNINTERRUPTED SPACE TO WORK ON EVERYTHING?

  • Outside of your studios, each team will be given a War Room of their own. It is a space to hammer through ideas, take meetings with mentors, and work towards your strategy. Copious post-its will be provided.

CAN I HAVE GUESTS?

  • Due to capacity, no additional guests will be permitted in the workshops. Only those who have applied may attend. Guests may attend studio sessions, including family, other musicians, advisors, mentors, business partners and others you wish to bring close to your process. And of course, you can invite all your friends to the Release Day party.

CAN I COME AND GO FROM THE BUILDING?

  • Totally! Do what you have to do to feel good. We ask that you are present for workshops and studio time. If you have to leave for some reason during a workshop or studio, make sure a teammate is covering for you and gathering information. With that said, please try to get as many days off work as you can. The residency is a special place for you to focus on learning about your growth, creative process and business.

DO I HAVE TO SLEEP AT ZOO LABS?

  • It is highly advised and encouraged. Workshop & studio attendance is mandatory and most teams find that staying on campus makes the whole thing much easier. However, we understand that local teams may choose to stay at their own homes, but remember you are responsible for making it to workshops on time each day.

WILL THERE BE FOOD?

  • Yes and it is one of the best parts! We have an incredible chef that cooks an amazing organic lunch & dinner that she will tailor to everyone’s diets, allergies and other food needs. We’ll also make sure the studio is stocked with breakfast supplies and snacks that you love.

WHAT ABOUT CLEANING?

  • Everyone is responsible for keeping the building in good shape forever and always. Especially the kitchen.  Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink. If the dishwasher is clean, unload and put away all dishes and reload immediately from the black bins. If the dishwasher is full, run it. There is a rotating cleaning schedule posted- these people are responsible for making sure kitchen is clean by end of day (counters wiped, dishes put away, etc.)

IS THERE LAUNDRY?

  • There is! We have a washer & dryer with supplies on campus for you. So if those sweet threads of yours get a little filthy, we’ve got just the place to make them new again. You’ll find them in our attic.

DO I GET A KEY?

  • Zoo Labs gives you access to the building now and as alumni (aka forever), by means of a card key. If you lose your key, there is a $20 replacement fee. Please let us know immediately if you lose your key. Do not place any Zoo Labs sticker or information on your key.

THE PUBLISHING DEAL FAQ:

We believe that the residency should be free to artists which is why we're a non profit.

We believe that we should build together and prosper together.

WHAT IS PUBLISHING?

  • The business or profession or commercial production of a piece of information, musical score, recording, literature or art is sold to the public.

WHAT’S THE AGREEMENT? AT WHAT PERCENTAGE?

  • Under our Income Participation Agreement, you will share 10% of your publishing income from the songs you make during the residency with us for a ten-year term, but you have the freedom and flexibility to work with other professional publishing companies or administrators who can attempt to get your music licensed and commercially boost your songs.

HOW AM I HELD ACCOUNTABLE?

  • Within in the year of writing or recording your compositions from Zoo Labs, you must publish them. You can use a third party or publish them yourself.

  • We have a relationship with SongTrust to offer you a discount code on using their services. They are a co-publisher that will help collect your global royalties, while making it easy to split percentages amongst other artists you may partner with.

  • If you have not connected Zoo Labs as a publisher, then you must notify us when you receive a payment within 3 years of publishing the song.

WHO OWNS THE COPYRIGHT IN MY SONGS AND SOUND RECORDING UNDER THESE AGREEMENTS?

  • YOU DO!  Importantly, under both agreements, YOU are the exclusive copyright owner    of both your original compositions AND the master recordings that you create here at Zoo Labs. You will leave the residency with a copy of all files & music created, as well as any other media that is available and related. Be sure to bring a hard drive.

DO I NEED A LAWYER?

  • It is very important to us that you read and understand these agreements.  Please seek professional advice if you feel you need further explanation.

DO I HAVE TO DO THIS? CAN I NEGOTIATE DIFFERENT TERMS?

  • Our focus and resources must go into our non-profit mission of accelerating entrepreneurial musicians, and as such we are simply not able to customize our agreements. We rely on standardized agreements which we have taken pains to make overly fair.

SINCE YOU ARE A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR SHARE OF THE INCOME?

  • All profits that we receive will go back into providing this program and resources like it  to future Zoo Labs animals such as yourselves.

WHAT IF I HAVE FEEDBACK ON THE AGREEMENT?

  • If you have feedback or think you found something in our agreements that could use more clarity, we'd love your input as it benefits current and future residents.  Please drop us a note in plain English (no red-lines, please!) and we’ll take a look. For addendums or changing of terms, please see the section above titled “Can I Negotiate Different Terms?”
